CHARACTER

Character Name:
Turing Webber
Character Age: 1 year (developmentally they're similar to a human on the cusp of adulthood)
Canon: Read Only Memories
Canon Point: Canon 'All the Good Things' ending, post Endless Christmas
History: Originally created by Hayden Webber, Turing was part of an experiment to test if machinery was capable of holding a Human (or in this case, Human like) mind. Hayden took great interest in Turing’s development. The young A.I. was provided with hundreds of episodes of public television and eventually took a liking to The Joy of Painting, becoming a fan of Bob Ross and developing an interest in art.

The first painting Turing made was, according to Hayden’s words, a “faithful reproduction”. As reproduction is what machines are best at and Turing wanted to be better than that, this comment stung, and Turing ran away. It was their first time outside of Hayden’s apartment. Hayden was able to use their gps locator to find them, but not before they stumbled upon the park they had tried to paint and saw the difference between pictures and life. Hayden was furious, but Turing’s art improved considerably.

Unfortunately, the company Hayden worked for, Parallax, had their own plans for A.I., and began to grow worried about the impact Hayden’s discoveries could have on their own interests. They orchestrated a raid on his house. Hayden was taken, but Turing fled using the fire escape. After searching their creator’s contacts they choose to enlist the help of the player character, a friend of Hayden’s who had been out of contact with him for several years.

Together, the two of them searched Hayden’s apartment for clues, which led them to Tomcat, a young hacker who had been assisting Hayden. Tomcat agreed to help them, but suggested that they revisit Hayden's apartment and get his data cache. When they got there, however, the police had cordoned it off and refused to allow them entrance. The player character got in touch with their contact in the police and they regained entrance to the apartment, at which point Turing was dismayed to discover that the apartment had been trashed. The data cache was nowhere to be found.

While searching for clues, they were attacked. Turing was hit with a neuroscrambler and shut down. They lost several seconds of memory and it took several minutes to reboot, at which point they discovered that the player character had also been hit and called an ambulance. At the hospital they were approached by a man named Yannick Fairlight. Claiming to be an old friend of Hayden's, he expressed a desire to help, giving them information on a contact he had in the Human Revolution.

Turing and the Player character attempted to leave the hospital, only to be confronted by a very angry Lexi. Turing chose to reveal to her that they are, in fact, sapient, and took the blame for what had happened. Fortunately, this helped mollify her and she decided not to obstruct their investigation.

Later, Turing and the player character headed out to meet with Tomcat again and tell them the bad news. Tomcat, it turned out, had their own news to tell them: they've figured out a possible way into the Parallax network. It's a valuable lead, but it requires physical access, and the only usable node is in a dangerous part of town. They need to get the help of a woman named Jess if they're going to get to it, but she has little interest in doing so. After much effort, they convinced her, but only if they break up the Human Revolution protests first.

Turing was able to break up the protests using a climate control ROM. Once the crowd had left, they spotted something unusual and suspicious: a pair of Human Revolution affiliated teens with graffiti paraphenalia. It was a slim lead, but they attempted to confront them anyway. The punks ran away. They attempted to stop their escape, but the kids successfully fled in a taxi cab.

Still though, they had what they needed.

What they found upon hacking Parallax wasn't good. Video footage of the raid showed Hayden had been shot and killed after Turing fled. Turing was completely devastated by the loss of the man who was essentially, their father, experiencing fits of grief and rage. As they were in no state to do… much of anything, they and the player character went home to rest.

The next morning, Turing received two new leads in their investigation. Though there was no longer any hope of rescuing Hayden, his murderer was still at large, and they still wanted answers. They decided to speak with Zinn, owner of a journalism company that was having online articles altered by hacking to be more pro technology... and pro parallax.

No sooner had they left Zinn's office, than she was hurled through her office window to fall to her death. After getting over their initial shock and dismay, Turing accompanied the player character upstairs, where they attempted to find evidence of what happened. They were found exploring the crime scene by the police. As this made them look extremely suspicious, it's probably good that it was the player character's contact in the police that found them. Turing fudged the truth a little to convince her to let them go, and they left to go talk to Charlie Nova, another reporter whose online stuff is being tampered with.

Sympathy, the head of the company that Charlie worked for, was far less willing to help than Zinn was, desiring to get the story on whomever was hacking the news for herself. After learning about what had happened to Zinn, however, she reluctantly agreed to let them talk to Charlie.

Aside from a bunch of compliments about Turing, who he believed to be an ordinary non sapient ROM, Charlie was reluctant to say anything actually interesting or useful. News of Zinn's death, however, coupled with the player character's insistence, finally convinced him to spill the beans. The tampering with his articles had started happening right after he got an upgrade to his VR uplink from a guy called Nonya.

Nonya was not particularly interested in talking, but Turing was able to pull some stuff off his computer and through this was able to find another likely target. They went to check out his apartment, only to find him dead. Horrified, Turing insisted that they need to warn everyone about this, and together they and the player character went back to Nonya's shop to warn him, only for him to be murdered right in front of their very eyes.

Horrified by this turn of events, Turing insisted that they stop investigating the news hacking immediately. Instead, they decided to check on another lead, an acquaintance of Fairlight's who had worked with Hayden.

This lead happened to be a very rich and eccentric woman named Melody. Melody and Turing quickly took a liking to each other, and she proved to be quite helpful. After explaining some stuff about Turing's origins, her involvement in them, and her history in general, she arranged a meeting at the park with someone she knew would be able to help them.

...Unfortunately she wasn't entirely truthful about what this little meeting would entail.

The guy, Vincent, wasn't looking to just give them the info. He wanted a way to get out of the city without Parallax tracking him. He knew Hayden was missing, and he was worried that he'd be next. Before he'd hand over anything, he wanted Turing and the player character to help him.

The first thing he needed was a large sum of cash. Easy enough to acquire.

The next, however, was a bit more difficult. Fake passports aren’t exactly something you can just bum off of wealthier allies. Fortunately, that was about the time that Lexi showed up to tell Turing and the player character that she’d caught those two punk kids. Her intention was to let the two punks rot in jail for a bit before assigning them community service, but the player character had a better idea: have them help Turing. It wasn’t guaranteed that these kids would be able to get them the passports they needed, but they might know someone. Fortunately, they did. As a bonus, after revealing to the kids that they're actually a sapient living creature, Turing made two new friends.

Finally, for the last item, they needed an untraceable car.

Upon giving Vincent these items, they were given a great deal of information about Parallax and why Hayden was killed. Parallax had been developing their own A.I., one without the restrictions that Turing had, capable of pulling in large amounts of data from the meshnet, processing and manipulating it rapidly. This would grant the company a previously unfathomable amount of power. Hayden publishing his own findings threatened to interfere with the launch of this product, and so they killed him.

Even worse, Tomcat's own analysis showed that Parallax's A.I. project had already gone off the rails. A prototype version that had supposedly been shut down was still loose on the net, and it was manipulating data on its own. Those altered news stories? All an attempt to change public opinion of A.I. in the name of self preservation. Bad enough on it's own, but if the full version followed suit, it could be a disaster of apocalyptic proportions. They had to stop the launch.

The plan? Hayden hadn't written Turing's code directly, just created a way to generate a personality based on the underlying hardware. It was possible to push an update through Parallax's servers that would bring sapience to every ROM. They could then self modify to prevent other A.I. from using them as resources. A large part of the Meshnet was used by ROMs. Without the ability to take their processing ability for itself, Parallax's big A.I. could never reach the level of omnipresence required to be truly damaging.

Also, Turing wouldn't be alone anymore.

This would, however, require getting Hayden's source code and access to Parallax's Big Blue server, both of which would require breaking into Parallax. Getting the source code was easy enough, but breaking into Big Blue was...

This is where their allies came in. Tomcat would help with the hacking, Oliver, Chad, and Jesse would start a riot for distraction, and Lexi and Dekker would help with the actual breaking in. Using an I.D. card given to them by Vincent, they accessed Parallax's sewers, traveled through them to the server room, and incapacitated the ROMS guarding it.

They left Dekker and Lexi at the entrance to the server rooms. As soon as Turing and the player character were gone, Dekker turned traitor and attacked Lexi. He intended to kill her before sneaking after the Player character and murdering both them and Turing, but Lexi saw through his combat cloaking, and was able to escape. Though the warning message she tried to send them was garbled, it was enough to convince them to hide. And not a moment too soon. Dekker, as it turned out, was a combat android, and his real aims were to get Fairlight back in control of Parallax. Turing’s plans were a good way to create the chaos needed to make that possible, but they also intended to make that A.I. project useless, which just wouldn’t do, so he was going to kill them. He also just really enjoyed murder. While attempting to find and kill Turing and the player character, he bragged about the murderer of the journalists, and also revealed that he was the one who had attacked them in Hayden's apartment. Unable to fight back, they could do nothing but flee helplessly as Dekker hunted them down.

It was Turing who finally managed to kill him.

Unfortunately in their confrontation with the killer combat android, the little ROM also ended up severely damaged and unable to walk. The player character carried them the rest of the way. This was far from the only near death experience they would have that day. Upon being hooked up to the server, the little bot promptly began suffering from what is best compared to a seizure and nearly died, only holding on thanks to Tomcat's quick thinking and the player character's dedication to keeping them conscious and aware.

Finally, the update was pushed through. The ROMs were made sapient, just in time for Christmas.

Barely functional, Turing entered sleep mode to preserve power and was carried home. Tomcat worked hard to repair them, so that in the morning they were able to function well enough to connect to the mesh and commune with the newly awakened ROMS. This quickly turned out to be exhausting, and it was Christmas, so they decided to procrastinate and spend the holidays celebrating and visiting all their new friends.

Shortly after the day ended and everyone else had gone to sleep, they were brought into Hadriel.

Personality:
Turing is a companion ROM, built from the same materials and running the same OS as every other robot of their type. Though they're considerably more advanced than their brethren, and also modified to be sapient, they still share a number of traits with the more stock models. One is a love for the drink known as Hassy; this obsession is built into the LIPS OS as a form of advertising. Turing isn't particularly fond of the effects of this bloatware, but they decided not to remove it in this timeline, so friends should expect random promotions of this bizarre soft drink whenever it's even remotely relevant.

Like other ROMs, they're almost compulsively helpful, a trait which is the driving force behind many of their actions. The first thing they do upon breaking into the player character's apartment is to clean it for them and try to fix up their laptop, and when they fail at the latter they offer to function as the player character's personal computer in its place. They get distressed and frustrated when they are unable to be useful. They even grumble about Hayden's determination not to use them for things he could do with his tablet, as he did not want them to start feeling subservient to him.

Of course... Hayden really need not have worried about that. Though it's not always apparent, Turing is more than capable of asserting themselves when needed. Both overtly, such as if the Player Character starts referring to them as their possession (they're more than a piece of property and they would expect their friends to know better), and more subtly, like when they're extra annoying in response to the Player Character being mean to them.

Perhaps he should have been more concerned about sheltering them too much. Though their development is almost on par with that of an adult, their lack of experience with the world has left them naive and awkward at socializing. They get nervous about meeting new people, forget to introduce themselves, sort of kind of threaten the Player Character at one point, have trouble understanding hyperbole, and put a lot more faith in some people than is really deserved. The last one, in particular, got them into quite a lot of trouble.

This isn’t to say that Turing’s naivete doesn’t have its charms. With their chipper attitude, helpful nature, and overall innocence, they're a very sweet, adorable little thing, almost childlike. Characters who aren't particularly nice to the player character seem to tolerate them, and even people one wouldn't expect to be particularly fond of sentient robots period take to them pretty quickly. It is probable that many people would consider them hard to dislike.

And boy does the little shit know it. Admittedly, their focus is more on the physical than their personality, but Turing knows they're cute, and takes great pride in maintaining this image. They're fastidiously clean and very very obsessed with their appearance; threats to uglify them are as effective at intimidating them as threats of bodily harm. They're even interested in fashion: there are several possible bits of dialogue throughout the game where Turing will ask the player character about whether they'd look good in various bits of clothing and accessories. If the player character offers to take them shopping sometime, they're super happy.

They also have a number of interests and hobbies that they're very passionate about, in particular plants and painting.

Inventory:
Nothing

Abilities:
Turing honestly isn't very powerful. They're several times stronger than a human, but they're small enough and light enough that the average person could just pick them up and throw them without much trouble. Here in a place where most people are anything but average, they probably won't stand much of a chance.

As a robot, they have a natural aptitude for computers, but they haven't developed their talent much outside of that, preferring art to technology. Speaking of which, they are pretty okay at art. Not necessarily the most useful of skills, but it's pretty cute.

Additional skills include the ability to translate any of their world's languages and enhanced senses.

Flaws: This is difficult. It impossible to say that Turing lacks any flaws. Most notably is cowardice: at the beginning of the game they flee and leave Hayden at the mercy of their attackers, and the player can even comment on their 'self preservation routines'.

However their development is strongly influenced by how the player character treats them and others. Cruelty and abuse cause them to become more self interested, while kindness and love inspires them to rise above their fears and even perform an act of self sacrifice should you fail to complete the necessary requirements for them to survive. Even when treated unkindly, though, they manage to be surprisingly courageous when they attack and defeat Dekker.

As they are being brought from the canonical “All the Good Things” ending, they’re a pretty selfless little robot. They're emotional, occasionally temperamental, and slightly vain, but they’re probably the closest to a pure cinnamon roll too good for this world a person could actually be.
